Senior External Relations Officer and Spokesperson


Céline Schmitt is Senior External Relations Officer and Spokesperson for UNHCR, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in France. She has been working for UNHCR since 2007, alternately at the headquarters in Geneva and on the field in the Great Lakes Region of Africa, particularly in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Burundi. She joined UNHCR office in Paris in July 2015. Her role is to engage and develop partnerships with various actors to create a favorable environment for refugees arriving in Europe, to create synergies and common projects between UNHCR and its partners, including civil society and to ensure the participation of refugees in decisions impacting their lives. As a Spokesperson, she also liaises with media and conducts media interviews. Since 2017, she is a UNHCR Innovation fellow with UNHCR’ Innovation Unit. Before UNHCR, she worked for an NGO in Cape Verde and for the French Embassy in Tanzania. She graduated from Strasbourg Institute of Political Studies and have a Master’s degree in development, cooperation and Humanitarian Affairs from University Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne.
